South Texas Wildlife Preserve - Dr. Rick Tinnin

Explore one of the top three birding "hot spots" in the U.S. Background lectures and field observation teach bird identification by distinctive field marks, behavior, and flight patterns. Take field trips to Santa Ana NWR -- only 2,000 acres, but with more than 400 documented species; Bentsen State Park, where a number of new US species have been first recorded; Salineno, with a possibility of sighting Mexican rarities; and Chihuahuan Woods, a private preserve. Likely sightings include Chachalacas, Altamira Orioles, Great Kiskadees, and Brown Jays. Other target species are the Blue mockingbird, Red-billed Pigeon, Parrots, Parakeets and tiny White-collared Seedeater. Birding by pontoon boat on the Rio Grande is a special highlight.

Walking 1.5 miles per day on fairly even terrain, frequent stops. Low elevations. Full days in the field.

Program in association with University of Texas Marine Science Institute.

McAllen

Just five miles from the Rio Grande and U.S.-Mexico border, McAllen is a bustling city of 120,000 at the southernmost tip of Texas. Its palm-tree-lined streets lend a tropical atmosphere, while the cheerful sounds of Spanish and English languages spoken on the streets and in the markets offer a relaxed and pleasant air of a laid-back border town.
