Least Bittern .JPG

Experience the beauty of the lower Rio Grande Valley while birding in this unique location that has become a destination for birders worldwide. Through background sessions and extensive field observations, learn to identify birds by their distinctive field marks, behavior, and flight patterns. Take field trips to Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Sabal Palm Audubon Sanctuary, the southern-most preserve on the Rio Grande, and South Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico. Likely sightings include Green Jays, Least Bitterns, Sora, Clapper, Green and Ringed Kingfishers and -- with luck -- the extremely rare Black Rail. Keep a sharp eye to the sky for a possible Aplomado Falcon.

Birding field trips drive to selected sites. Approx. 6-7 seven hours in the field daily, walking up to a mile per day.

Program in association with University of Texas Marine Science Institute.
