Art Deco

Often described as the period of art deco or the jazz age, this streamlined modern trend inspired artists to explore new expression. Learn about the art deco influence on American industrial designers Russel Wright, Gilbert Rohde, and Donald Deskey

We will walk to Ernest Liotti's home to enjoy a glimpse of his Art Deco collection. Art Deco Instructor, Ernest Liotti, is a major collector of American industrial design of the 1930s, predominantly the works of Gilbert Rohde for the Herman Miller Company. We will walk to his home and enjoy a glimpse of his collection as part of Art Deco Week.

The Jazz Singers

Examine "jazz" vocal techniques such as blues, swing and scat through lectures, discussions, audio, and video recordings. Explore jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Connie Boswell, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, and others.

Performances each evening by Peabody artists and exceptional students. Free access to world-class Walters Art Museum across the street. Also enjoy a live performance by jazz pianist, Andy Fields, lecturer of The Jazz Singers. He will perform jazz interpretations of the American Songbook including composers such as Gershwin, Porter, and Berlin

Forefathers of the Blues

Examine the music and careers of guitarists/singers Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters--towering giants of American folk music. Although one was acoustic and one was electric, one was rural and the other urban, they defined the sound of modern blues.

Program in association with Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, providing musical training since 1857.

Art Deco Experience is four blocks from the Peabody Inn and we will encounter slightly hilly and uneven city sidewalks. Walk 1/2 block to cafeteria, 1.5 blocks to recital hall.

Baltimore

Once a center of shipbuilding on the Eastern seaboard, Baltimore remains an active port dedicated to preserving its maritime heritage. From historic neighborhoods to famed cultural and educational facilities, Baltimore is a world-class city.
