Stravinsky & the Ballets Russes

“Firebird,” “Petrushka,” and “Rite of Spring” were the first of Stravinsky's sensational scores written for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Analyze Stravinsky's unique artistic approaches that distinguished him as the foremost composer of his time.

Contrasting Approaches to Romeo & Juliet

Shakespeare's tale of star-crossed lovers has received many musical settings. Explore Tchaikovsky's very expressive, yet rather brief orchestral overture and compare it with the expansive, dramatic vocal-orchestral symphony by Berlioz.

The Creation of Song

Explore songs inspired by the poetry of Goethe, Muller, Verlaine, Mallarme, Dickenson, and Shakespeare. Hear examples of the perfect union of poetry and music by composers from Fauré to Poulenc, Schubert to Strauss, and Barber to Copland.

This program will take place during a very exciting time at the Peabody Conservatory. During the month of April, Conservatory students perform recitals for the completion of their degree. Each evening, select from numerous degree recitals, of various instrumentation!

Program in association with Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, providing musical training since 1857.

Baltimore

Once a center of shipbuilding on the Eastern seaboard, Baltimore remains an active port dedicated to preserving its maritime heritage. From historic neighborhoods to famed cultural and educational facilities, Baltimore is a world-class city.
