Combine insect hunts, science, and fun and what do you get? A learning adventure into the world of insects! Catch, hold and identify dragonflies and butterflies darting and dancing through fields and learn how New York’s citizen science project collects data throughout the state. Kayak and canoe the smooth, undeveloped waters of Chautauqua Lake’s outlet and watch for insects, along with turtles, ospreys and more! Catch aquatic insects hiding under water to learn how to use them to test water quality. Enjoy behind-the-scenes exploration of the collections of renowned naturalist Roger Tory Peterson. Open your eyes to the insect world and their importance to you. There will be insect songs, crafts, games, journaling, and campfire fun.

For participants and kids ages 10-15. At least one adult must attend for each youth registered. That adult and child will share the same room. The adult is responsible for supervision of child. Children and adults will walk up to three miles over mostly level terrain and stand and walk outdoors for up to three hours on a sunny day; some off-trail hikes in fields and streams.

Program in association with Jamestown Audubon Society, Inc.

Internet access in Library (limited hours). Indoor swimming pool (limited hours), a fitness room, laundromat, outdoor tennis courts and woodland walking trails.

Jamestown

Jamestown is the hometown of comedienne Lucille Ball, Nuremberg Judge and Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, and Roger Tory Peterson, the ornithologist whose collection is housed at the Peterson Institute of Natural History. Its location on Chautauqua Lake provides access to boating and fishing and the world-renowned Chautauqua Institution.
