Music still swings in the city that was home to Count Basie. But "KC" is much more than jazz: it's art, architecture and barbeque sauce, too! Get a full picture of this sophisticated city's arts and history from lectures, guided walks, and local experts. Take notes on jazz from ragtime to bebop, followed by a field trip to the American Jazz Museum, and live music at noted local jazz clubs. Docents bring alive the new wing of the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum. A guided walk reveals the Moorish-style architecture and fountains of romantic Country Club Plaza. Visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the home/studio of realist artist Thomas Hart Benton, and get a firsthand look at the life of our 33rd President at the Truman Library in Independence.

Program in association with University of Texas at Austin, providing programs as part of our lifelong learning mission.

This program will feature up to 2 miles of walking, most days, over even terrain. One hill walking to and from Country Club Plaza.

Kansas City

Straddling the Missouri-Kansas state line, Kansas City was a busy point of departure during the mid-1800s for settlers, missionaries and traders beginning their journey west. After World War I, the city became a hotbed of jazz for the likes of Charlie Parker and Count Basie and today is famous for its steaks, barbecues and thriving music scene.
