Experience firsthand the traditions and lifeways of one of the most ancient and venerated peoples of the Southwest. The Hopi trace their history in the Southwest to long before the Spanish arrived in 1540; many villages have been occupied since the 1100s A.D. We visit many villages, and other traditional sites, while experiencing the rich cultural life of the Hopi and enjoying personal interaction with tribal members. Craft demonstrations, complex social, family and elaborate ceremonial life, agricultural techniques, oral traditions, Hisatsinom (People of Long Ago) history, and modern interaction with Anglo society are some of the fascinating areas covered during the week. Your program leader and the majority of your instructors are Hopi.

Photography, recording, and sketching are prohibited in and around individual villages. Please be sensitive and inquire locally.

Program in association with Northern Arizona University, offering educational Southwestern adventures for over 25 years.

Best air destination is Phoenix (240 miles; commercial shuttle available). Site elevation 6,000 feet.

Second Mesa (Hopi Reservation)

Not to be confused with the nearby town of the same name, Hopi Nation’s Second Mesa is located on the Hopi Reservation and comprises three Native American Hopi tribe villages. Art and craft shops dot the reservation displaying local handicraft, and archaeological and historic sites surround the region.
