The Anasazi chose Mesa Verde as their home centuries ago, building an elaborate culture among the canyons, leaving an impressive legacy magnificently preserved. Visit cliff dwellings and learn of the cultural, artistic, engineering and farming advancements of these prehistoric people. Trace park history, from its discovery to the Native Americans who share this magnificent country today. Learn about railroad history, miners and cowboys of this true western region during a full-day field trip aboard the historic Durango & Silverton Railroad. Ascend nearly 3,000 feet as a steam engine pulls you through some of the most dramatic terrain ever traversed by rail. Enjoy four field trips including a visit to the Anasazi Heritage Center in Cortez.

Exploration of cliff dwellings (7,000 feet) requires good physical condition and for one site only, ability to climb short, steep ladders.

Program in association with Northern Arizona University, offering educational Southwestern adventures for over 25 years.

Nearest major airport is in Albuquerque, N.M. Regional airports in Cortez and Durango, CO. No public transportation to site.

Mesa Verde National Park

Fourteen centuries of history are displayed at this park, established by Congress in 1906. Mesa Verde is the first national park to preserve the works of humankind, the highlight of which are spectacular cliff dwellings and mesa-top villages built between A.D. 450 and 1300.
