"Plateau Point, Grand Canyon - Copyright 2007 Jeff Strang, NAU Elderhostel"

Encounter pristine streams and waterfalls, secret groves of lush vegetation and majestic scenery everyday. Trek through five life zones and nearly half of the earth’s history as you backpack 24 breathtaking miles, on established trails, from the South Rim to the Colorado River and up to the North Rim. Camp for four nights under the stars, below the Canyon rim, and experience nature's wonders. Enjoy an entire day along the Colorado River at historic Phantom Ranch, a haven to hikers and river runners since the early 1900s, while exploring the mystery of the Canyon’s Inner Gorge. Learn geology, canyon ecology and the human history of this incredible land in the company of experienced wilderness guides.

Strenuous hiking (5-8 miles per day) carrying backpacks weighing 30-35 lbs. at altitudes from 2,400 to 8,200 feet, with elevation changes from 1,400 to 4,200 feet; uneven, sometimes rocky terrain. Flagstaff and Grand Canyon rim elevations exceed 7,000 feet. Drinking water and toilet facilities available at campgrounds.

Program in association with Northern Arizona University, offering educational Southwestern adventures for over 25 years.
