As you hike into the depths of the Grand Canyon, from pine forest to desert, from 250-million-year-old rock to the 1.8-billion-year-old Vishnu Schist, each footstep takes you 60,000 years back in time. On the rim enjoy presentations and day hikes with insights on natural and human history. Pause during hikes to enjoy ever-changing vistas. Phantom Ranch offers a tranquil respite and a "world away" from the rim. Its historic cabins are nestled beneath towering rock walls, under ancient cottonwoods and adjacent to Bright Angel Creek, tumbling from the North Rim to its confluence with the Colorado River. Enjoy time to explore the South Rim and Phantom Ranch area and take a variety of inner Canyon hikes or relax and recharge on your layover day.

This is a very difficult hiking program! Previous backpacking experience a must, 2 full days of very strenuous hiking (17 miles in 2 days; 4,600 ft. elev. loss/gain); 2 days of lighter hiking. Participants must pack their personal belongings and be prepared for adverse weather conditions.

Program in association with Northern Arizona University, offering educational Southwestern adventures for over 25 years.
