The pristine desert landscape of western Arizona, "forested" with an unusual mix of many-armed saguaro cactus and otherworldly Joshua trees, is home to a wide variety of bird life uncommon elsewhere in the world. Enjoy balmy mornings on leisurely walks through spectacular desert and mountain landscapes and hidden creekside oases (desert wildflowers likely in full bloom) while learning of the bird life and habitats of the area. You will learn to identify many desert birds in the field, as well as learning of their migration and nesting habits. Highlights of the birding will include the lush riparian landscapes of Date Creek and the Santa Maria and Hassayampa Rivers, ribbons of greenery and flowing water hidden deep within this arid land.

Beginning birders will have plenty of assistance in learning how to identify species. For participants who enjoy walking (up to a mile at a time) and the outdoors.

Program in association with Northern Arizona University, offering educational Southwestern adventures for over 25 years.

Limited commercial shuttle from Phoenix airport (60 miles).

Wickenburg

Named after an Austrian miner who struck it rich during the 1862 gold rush, the town of Wickenburg is surrounded by rocky foothills where abandoned gold mines are still a common sight. Located in the northern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, it is popular with outdoor enthusiasts who come to hike, bird-watch or just enjoy the stunning natural beauty.
