Central Arizona has some of the most spectacular and fascinating hiking country in the Southwest. We begin our hiking and exploring in secluded and spectacular backcountry areas among the majestic red cliffs and spires of Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon and the Verde Valley. We then travel to the desert via the lofty and pine-forested Mogollon Rim, including a visit to Tonto Cliff Dwellings. Our desert treks take us through the rugged and mysterious desert landscapes of Salt River Canyon and the Superstition Mountains (home of the legendary Lost Dutchman Mine). Experienced wilderness guides will introduce the geology, ecology and human history of the area. For moderate to serious hikers, this program is a unique opportunity to enjoy hiking while visiting many varied environmental settings, from deep red rock canyons to expansive mountain and desert vistas; pristine natural wonders to prehistoric rock art sites.

Daily hikes of up to six miles; some irregular terrain with cross-country walking. Elevations from 2,000 to 6,000 feet.

Program in association with Northern Arizona University, offering educational Southwestern adventures for over 25 years.

Itinerary

Arrivals, Sedona area, 3 nights; van to Apache Lake/Salt River Canyon, 3 nights. Independent arrivals in Sedona area by 5 PM.; independent departures from Apache Lake after 8 AM.

Sedona

Sedona was historically a rural ranching community in Oak Creek Canyon. Today, the sunny city attracts visitors to its red-rock cliffs and lush evergreens, international film festival, and lively art scene.
