Itinerary: Marble Canyon, AZ 4 nights; Grand Canyon - South Rim 2 nights
Vermillion and Chocolate Cliffs Near Lees Ferry - Copyright 2008 Jeff Strang, NAU Elderhostel

From its beginning to its heart, discover the many and varied hiking opportunities of this grandest of canyons. In Marble Canyon, the start of the Grand Canyon, escape the crowds and hike seldom visited wilderness trails and see why many call this area the geologic “Center of the Universe.” Set at the base of the towering Vermilion Cliffs, Marble Canyon is a hiker’s paradise of red rock canyons, mesas and buttes steeped in colorful history. Hike and explore the mighty Colorado River from Lee’s Ferry to the twisting convoluted shapes of beautiful Cathedral Wash. Mid-week, travel along the Echo Cliffs en route to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Hikes will include the famous South Kaibab trail with jaw-dropping views around every corner of the inner gorge, Vishnu Temple, Wotan’s Throne, and many others monuments. Trained naturalist guides will share their knowledge of the canyon and interpret the many facets of the canyon’s geologic, natural and human histories in the field.

Challenging and fun hikes of 3-6 miles daily on maintained and unmaintained trails over uneven terrain requiring agility and balance. Be prepared for some rock scrambling. Some sustained uphills; elevation changes up to 1,200 feet. Hiking elevations from 1,500 to 7,000 feet.

Program in association with Northern Arizona University, offering educational Southwestern adventures for over 25 years.
