The 2008 grant recipient was Jill Harrison-Rexrode, a doctoral candidate at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Ms. Harrison-Rexrode’s dissertation focuses on older adults’ cultural tastes in relation to building healthy support networks.

Ms. Harrison-Rexrode earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science from Radford University in Virginia. Her dissertation research explores the ways in which older adults’ cultural tastes help them to build support networks, and whether this differs by gender, ultimately examining how cultural tastes help mitigate social isolation among older adults and what their effect is on well-being.

“I am honored to receive this scholarship to be able to complete my research,” says Ms. Harrison-Rexrode. “Research that provides substantive knowledge about social networks and well-being from older adults in independent and assisted-living communities is important for public policy because it indicates how well society is meeting the needs of this population — something that will be of increasing importance as Baby Boomers transition into old age and, for some, become residents of these communities.”
