This year at the Learning in Retirement Association (LIRA) program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, topics for the Moses Greeley Parker Lecture Series include:

The Right of Self-Defense: Its History and Meaning – No right has seemed more sacred and inviolable to most people throughout history than the right to self-defense. Yet a close consideration of this right’s history and current status reveals surprising controversies and puzzles about this most cherished of rights.

Angel Wagner and “Grupo Fantasia – A day of Latin music from the Caribbean and South America. Members will enjoy a colorful mix of music played primarily on original, handmade indigenous instruments.

50 Years of Jack Kerouac’s Dharma Bums – A discussion and slide talk of the significance of Kerouac’s 2nd most famous novel, on the 50th anniversary of its publication. This program is a partnership with Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! 2008.

Polis Is This: Charles Olsen and the Persistence of Place – Called “a beautifully composed homage to one of the few truly monumental American poets of our times,” this film traces the journey of poet Charles Olsen. This film is presented in collaboration with the Massachusetts Poetry Festival.

Weird Massachusetts: An Exploration of Local Legends and Haunting Happenings – Halloween is coming: don’t be too scared to learn about some of Massachusetts’ best kept secrets.

How History Inspires the Art of Today – Find out how history ignites the imagination of artists.

Konarka: Powering the Way – Did you know that the global headquarters of a company that wants to power tomorrow’s economic growth with the power of the sun is in Lowell. Join members and learn how bright the future will be.

Tamburitzans of Duquesne University – The Tamburitzans are dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the culture of Eastern Europe and its neighbors through song, dance and music. Enjoy an afternoon of absolute wonder with them.

Living with Robots – In this fascinating talk you will learn about how robots are being used today, how they will be used in the future, and how we’re designing systems to better work with people.

The Foreclosure Crisis and the Registry of Deeds – The Middlesex North Register of Deeds will offer his analysis of the current foreclosure crisis and will show how to use the registry’s web site to research current ad historic land records.

In the Days of the Poorhouse: Tewksbury 1854-1900 – The author of a new book, “Ordinary People” will focus on some of the lives of the 85,000 “inmates” who passed through the Massachusetts State Almshouse, one of the largest such institutions in America.

Film: Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey – Through events seemingly lifted from modern-day espionage, this compelling film recounts the dramatic biography of Russian engineer Lev Termin (Leon Theremin), who pioneered the field of electronic music with his invention of the first electronic instrument in 1919: the Theremin. In collaboration with the Lowell Music Film Series. A live Theremin performance will follow the screening.

The Lowellian Painters of the 19th Century – A look at painters who called Lowell home in the last century.
