MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC

Members of the L.I.F.E. program at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York are enjoying a nice variety of musical interludes this summer and fall. Here’s what they will be listening to:

Introduction to Italian Grand Opera: LaGioconda – Pure romanticism with universal appeal; opera includes impossible love, betrayal, lust, intrigue and murder. It is also a wonderful vehicle to show off great voices. Participants will listen to the music and discuss the voices, the characters, and the drama. They will end the course by watching a DVD of the opera La Gioconda.

Buddy Holly: A Celebration – Buddy Holly was with us for a very short time, but created an incredible amount of great music during that time. A biography and a broad sampling of his sound will be presented.

The Constellations and Their Music – Members will venture into the stratosphere to hear the music of the symbols. They will take each of the zodiac signs and discuss composers, performers, lyricists, those who make music and how the music is an expression for their total energies.

Return to Folk Music – Participants will listen to such greats as Peter, Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio, Bob Dylan, Ian & Sylvia, Peter Seeger and others. Bongos are encouraged and members should be prepared for a real Greenwich Village-style hootenanny.

That Old Time Rock n’ Roll – Members will return to those pink and black days of Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and all the other stars of the time for three hours of Rock ‘n Roll, Rockabilly, Doo Wop and Rhythm & Blues from the 1950s and very early 1960s. Requests and dedications are encouraged.

Boston Pops Concert – In August members will travel to Bethel Woods, NY to listen to the world-famous Boston Pops. The evening concludes with a fireworks display.
