MILR PLANNING 20TH ANNIVERSARY

The 20th Anniversary Committee of the McGill Institute for Learning in Retirement in Montreal has been meeting frequently in the last few months to discuss all the exciting possibilities for celebrating their 20th anniversary year, which begins with the 2009 academic session. Here is some of what they are planning.

Their PR Committee of one, in the form of Pauline Ann Phelps, has worked her magic in making the first moves for contacting venues to exhibit the artworks of their talented artist-members. The venues being considered are, amongst others, Tudor Hall in 2010, Montreal City Hall Boardroom for 2009, and the Bonsecours Market for the second floor.

They also hope to launch their celebration with a one-day Art Festival in the Fall of 2009, that will show off the visual arts as well as crafts, poetry readings, story-telling, and musical talents of their members. They had pinned their hopes on Victoria Hall, however, they have been dashed, as Westmount City Council has decided that since MILR is not Westmount-based, they do not qualify to have the use of the Hall. So the search continues for an appropriate venue.

What a coup it would be to formally launch the year with a Movie Premiere in Montreal. They are contacting the distributors of a delightful Swiss movie (an International Award nomination for 2008 – the story of how change is still possible in the lives of the elderly). They are dreaming big for this one!

Potential lecturers from their membership have already been contacted and put on hold for a lecture series that will continue through 2009. Interested organizations must be approached to decide on the lectures they wish to host; publicity kits and a poster advertising the lectures must be designed – so they have their work cut out.

It has been their great good luck to have a benefactor who has contributed to the printing of their new 20th anniversary logo and the accompanying stationary; so they are really legitimate now.

Finally, they have applied for funding for these and other events from the Department of Canadian Heritage.
