Original Query from Dan MacDonald, SAGE, University of Arizona,
Tucson, AZ
Hello! This is my first query. Our curriculum group surveys members for
input, sets courses, finds/orients moderators, prepares mailings, etc. Now,
we seek samples of policies/guidelines for these tasks from other ILRs,
e.g., should non-members moderate or run classes? Are some moderators paid
and others not? How do you deal with enrollees who turn out to be chronic
absentees? Is "first come - first served" good policy for sign-ups?...A
better way? What makes a balanced curriculum? If you have written material
you can share...Great! Thank you!
From Bob Connelly, The Circle of Scholars, Salve Regina University,
Newport, RI.
We ,of necessity, use non-members as well as members as teachers/facilitators.
We have just begun to offer $40/class session to our facilitators in order
to be able to offer 6-8 topics per each of our 2 semesters a year. Some
facilitators don't take the offer but most do. For those who don't take
the cash we send them a letter of thanks and a statement that their services
were worth $x and are considered a charitable gift to the University. First
come - first served is appropriate if all members receive the mail on the
same day. But we have a 1-2 day delay in receipt of mail in some communities.
Therefore we have an administrative lottery to fill the seats. Sorry, We
have not codified our 'rules'
From Berny Dumoff, ILR at Albertus Magnus College, New Haven, CT
We have been offering between 30 and 35 different courses each Spring and
Fall 10 week Semester. Our Study Group Leaders are a mix between members
and non-members. We are fortunate to be able to have retired or active professors
from Yale, Quinnipiac College, Southern Ct State U as well as Albertus Magnus
College who are happy to volunteer to lead classes for us. Our ILR is a
totally volunteer organization, no one gets paid - no one at all. Our curriculum
committee consists of 12 members, almost all of whom lead a class, and/or
are responsible for arranging for others to lead classes. We do have lotteries
occasionally for those classes where registration exceeds room capacity.

The policies have undergone complete rewrite but are not yet on line. However,
this version should give you a place to start. http://www.jmc.mwc.edu/elder/proc_man/SectionF.htm
