Watch as the children kick up dust in the schoolyard, passing the soccer ball, shouting to each other in Spanish and English. Bring your young soccer players to this tropical paradise for an immersion in Costa Rica’s culture, ecosystem and Latin-style futbol. Cross-cultural games, with U.S. and Costa Rican children intermixed, offer authentic interactions between children, while local expert coaches provide the secrets to a winning touch on the ball. Throughout the adventure, both generations experience the beaches, volcanoes, wildlife, history and rainforests.

Highlights

•

Soccer lessons from local professional coaches introduce practice drills and techniques from the famous Latin style of the game.

•

Kayak along the coast to a small island in the Pacific Ocean.

•

Meet with local children through soccer games followed by ice cream socials.

Activity Particulars

Walking up to 1.5 miles per day over uneven trails in hot and humid conditions.

Day 1

Flight from the U.S.A.

Days 1-2

Arrival San Jose (Costa Rica)
2 nights

San Jose is the gateway to the nation’s rainforests, parks and other natural riches, as well as the small villages where young and old gather in open squares for pick-up games of soccer. Tapping into this native expertise, young players learn the passion of the game and new skills from a local coach during drills. Everyone has a chance to cheer on the players and experience indigenous wildlife at the National Biodiversity Institute.

Lodging: Comfortable hotel near city center.

Days 3-4

Coach to Arenal
2 nights

At the base of a rumbling, active volcano, soccer players practice the beautiful game, taking cues from the volcano itself, which builds and then bursts with energy and plumes of smoke. Hiking on the trails of the Arenal Volcano National Park introduces the unique ecology of the region. With a morning of practice under their cleats, young players join local students for an evening match and informal opportunities to communicate in the universal language of soccer.

Lodging: Comfortable hotel with volcano views and thermal pools.

Days 5-8

Coach to Punta Leona
2 nights
Coach to San Jose
1 night
Departure

This Pacific coast preserve is rich with wildlife, including crocodiles. A boat safari in the mangrove-lined river introduces these massive creatures in their native habitat, and an outrigger canoe excursion brings the ocean ecosystem to life. Morning practice sessions prepare players to challenge their new skills in an exhilarating evening soccer match in the local soccer stadium.

Lodging: Rainforest and beach resort.

Costa Rica

Hugged by two bodies of water and sandwiched between Nicaragua and Panama, Costa Rica’s topography, climate and geographical position are more than mere facts: they define this tiny country. Cloud rainforests, valleys of coffee and volcanic mountain peaks fill the land between Caribbean and Pacific beaches. This ecological Eden protects its natural treasures in acres of preserved land, and is the only country in the world without a standing army.
